Description
Château Lynch-Bages 2009 is a striking Pauillac that captures everything collectors love about great Bordeaux: depth, polish, power, and remarkable longevity. A blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, it comes from one of the most consistently celebrated estates in the Médoc, with a history of being restored to prominence by the Cazes family after its mid-20th-century decline.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, concentrated ruby-garnet color that hints at its richness. The nose is expressive and layered, with blackcurrant, blackberry, ripe plum, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and subtle spice unfolding with air.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and voluptuous, with a massive yet beautifully composed texture. Ripe dark fruit, fine tannins, and well-integrated oak create a wine that feels powerful and succulent without heaviness. The finish is long and persistent, and although it is already impressive, the 2009 vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 30 years or more.
Production
Château Lynch-Bages sits on the Bages plateau just southwest of Pauillac, where gravel-rich soils provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to reach full ripeness. The vineyard is divided into numerous parcels, allowing for careful plot-by-plot selection, and the grapes are harvested by hand before being sorted and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then matured for 15 to 18 months in up to 75% new French oak barrels, depending on the vintage.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for classic dishes such as entrecôte, roast lamb, venison, duck breast, or braised beef with mushrooms and thyme. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young, though longer aeration can help the wine open further.
Producer
Château Lynch-Bages has been owned by the Cazes family since 1939, when Jean-Charles Cazes took over a struggling property and led its remarkable revival. Today it is regarded as one of the most reliable and respected estates in Pauillac, known for combining classic structure with generous fruit and consistency across vintages. Its reputation as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification has been strongly reinforced by decades of outstanding winemaking and international acclaim.
