Description
Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1999 is a distinguished Grand Cru Classé from Pessac-Léognan, celebrated for combining the power of Bordeaux with remarkable refinement. Produced by one of the region’s most historic estates, it offers the depth, structure and complexity expected from a mature, highly sought-after Left Bank wine.
Tasting Notes
Deep and intense in colour, the 1999 vintage opens with concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, complemented by cedar, graphite, tobacco, coffee and exotic spice. On the palate, it is powerful yet composed, with layered dark fruit, impressive structure and polished, silky tannins.
With more than two decades of bottle age, the wine shows the beginnings of mature Bordeaux complexity, with developing nuances of leather, truffle, forest floor and subtle smoky notes alongside its dark-fruit core. It should drink beautifully now, while well-stored bottles may continue to evolve over the coming years.
Production
The estate’s vineyards lie in the gravel-rich terroir of Pessac-Léognan, where well-draining soils encourage concentration and structure in the Cabernet Sauvignon, while Merlot and Cabernet Franc contribute richness, fragrance and finesse. The blend is traditionally vinified with careful extraction and matured in oak, allowing the wine’s substantial fruit and tannic framework to integrate into a layered, age-worthy style.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to rest upright. A careful decant of around 1–2 hours can help separate any sediment and reveal the wine’s aromatic layers, although older bottles should be monitored to preserve their vitality. It is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck with a rich sauce, mature hard cheeses or dishes featuring truffle and wild mushrooms.
Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion has a remarkable history dating back centuries, including a period associated with the Lazarist missionaries who helped establish the estate’s identity. Located just across from Château Haut-Brion, it is one of the most revered properties in the Graves classification and today forms part of the Domaine Clarence Dillon portfolio. Its wines are renowned internationally for their combination of intensity, elegance and exceptional ageing potential.
