Description

Château Haut-Brion 1999 is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated wines, produced by the historic estate that was named a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. From Pessac-Léognan, it combines the depth and authority expected of a First Growth with remarkable finesse, making it a distinguished expression of one of the world’s great wine estates.

Tasting Notes
Deep and intense in colour, the wine reveals an aromatic profile of blackcurrant, cassis and dark cherries, framed by classic notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco and exotic spice. With time in the glass, it develops further layers of truffle, forest floor, roasted coffee and subtle smoke—hallmarks of mature Haut-Brion. The palate is concentrated yet silky, with vibrant freshness, finely integrated tannins and a seamless texture. Dark fruit and mineral tones lead into a long, complex finish. The 1999 vintage has the structure and balance to continue developing in bottle, while mature examples offer an increasingly nuanced combination of savoury, earthy and spicy notes.

Production
The vineyards lie in Pessac-Léognan, just south of Bordeaux, where gravel, sand and clay soils provide excellent drainage and help retain warmth for the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Grapes are carefully selected and harvested at optimal ripeness before being vinified with a focus on precision, balance and the expression of the estate’s distinctive terroir. The wine is then matured in oak, allowing its fruit, structure and subtle smoky character to integrate over time.

Food & Serving
Serve Château Haut-Brion 1999 at approximately 16–18°C. It is a natural match for refined dishes such as roast beef, lamb, venison, beef tenderloin, truffle-based preparations and mature hard cheeses. Decanting is recommended, particularly for younger bottles or wines that have been stored undisturbed for many years; for a mature bottle, a careful decant shortly before serving is usually sufficient to remove any sediment while preserving its delicate aromas.

Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of the oldest and most prestigious names in Bordeaux, with a history stretching back centuries. Its status as one of the original Premier Crus of the 1855 classification cemented its place among the world’s elite estates, and it remains the only First Growth located outside the Médoc, in Pessac-Léognan. Haut-Brion is renowned for producing wines of exceptional depth, elegance and longevity, and continues to serve as a benchmark for the region.
