Description
Château d’Yquem is one of the most celebrated names in sweet wine, and the 2016 half-bottle shows exactly why the estate continues to stand apart. With exceptional concentration, luminous freshness and remarkable aromatic precision, it balances richness and lift in a way few dessert wines can match. This is a vintage that already feels polished, yet still carries the pedigree and structure for graceful development over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shines with a bright, golden hue that hints at both ripeness and finesse. The bouquet is precise and layered, opening with mango, lychee and jasmine, then unfolding into exotic fruit, dried apricot and a cool touch of menthol.
On the palate, it is moderately full-bodied and beautifully tensioned, with a concentrated texture that remains vibrant rather than heavy. The sweetness is seamlessly integrated by its lively acidity, giving the wine a racy, charming feel and a long, energetic finish. Thanks to its balance and depth, it has excellent aging potential and should continue to evolve elegantly for many years.
Production
Sourced from the historic Sauternes terroir in Bordeaux, Château d’Yquem benefits from an extraordinary microclimate where morning mist and afternoon sunshine encourage the development of noble rot, or botrytis cinerea. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard selection and highly selective harvesting, with pickers making multiple passes through the vines to choose only perfectly botrytized grapes. The result is a wine of remarkable concentration, made through careful vinification designed to preserve purity, complexity and balance.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, to keep the wine’s freshness and aromatic detail in focus. It pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts, tarte Tatin, or simply enjoyed on its own as a luxurious finale to a meal. Decanting is generally not necessary for a young, pristine bottle, though a brief airing can help the aromas open up in especially youthful vintages.
Producer
Château d’Yquem has long held an iconic place in Bordeaux and in the wider world of fine wine, with a reputation built on uncompromising quality and extraordinary consistency. The estate has earned legendary status for producing one of the most revered sweet wines in existence, and its history is inseparable from the Sauternes region itself. Its achievements include a long record of critical acclaim and a singular position as the benchmark against which other dessert wines are measured.
