Description
Château de Reignac Bordeaux Supérieur 2019 is a polished, modern Bordeaux that consistently punches well above its appellation. Crafted from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this cuvée offers the structure and depth of far pricier wines while remaining beautifully approachable in its youth. Reignac has built a reputation as one of the great overachievers of Bordeaux Supérieur, regularly outperforming more prestigious neighbors in blind tastings.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château de Reignac shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple hues at the rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe black cherries, cassis, and plums intertwined with notes of violet, cedar, baking spices, and a touch of graphite and cocoa from quality oak aging.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine with a velvety attack and finely woven tannins. Ripe dark fruit—blackberry, black cherry, and blackcurrant—is lifted by fresh acidity, giving the wine both generosity and tension. Subtle notes of tobacco leaf, mocha, and sweet spice emerge on the mid-palate, leading into a long, harmonious finish. While already enjoyable now with a short decant, the 2019 has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 7–10 years from vintage, gaining additional complexity and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Château de Reignac lies on a privileged terroir in Bordeaux, where gravelly soils and clay-limestone subsoils offer an ideal environment for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Vines are tended with great attention to detail, often using sustainable and carefully controlled practices to limit yields and maximize fruit quality. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness—often by parcel—to preserve freshness and varietal character. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vessels to ensure gentle extraction of color, flavor, and tannin. It is then matured in French oak barrels, a portion of them new, to integrate structure and add subtle spice and toasted notes without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Bordeaux Supérieur is an excellent partner for classic French-inspired dishes such as roast lamb, grilled entrecôte, duck breast, and beef stews like boeuf bourguignon. It also pairs beautifully with hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gouda), mushroom dishes, and richly flavored vegetable gratins. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. A decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s layered bouquet to fully open.
Producer
Château de Reignac, located in the heart of Bordeaux, has become a reference point for what can be achieved in the Bordeaux Supérieur category. The estate’s modern renaissance began when its current owners invested heavily in vineyard management and cellar technology, working alongside top consultants to raise quality to impressive heights. Frequently pitted against classified growths in blind tastings—and often emerging as a surprise favorite—Reignac has earned a loyal following for its ability to deliver grand cru style and detail at a more accessible price. Its success has helped redefine the reputation of Bordeaux Supérieur as a source of serious, ageworthy wines.
