Description

Catena Alta Malbec 2022 is a refined expression of Mendoza Malbec, shaped by fruit from high-altitude vineyard parcels and marked by freshness, mineral detail and silky tannins. It reflects the Catena family’s pioneering work in Mendoza, where the family has been making wine since 1902.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, concentrated colour. Aromas of raspberry and blackberry lead, joined by floral notes, dark chocolate and a hint of liquorice. On the palate it is dry, full-bodied and ripe, with lively acidity and a distinct mineral edge balancing its concentrated fruit. Velvety tannins carry through to a long finish.

Production
The fruit comes from selected parcels at Angelica, La Pirámide, Nicasia, Adrianna and Angelica Sur, situated 920–1,450 metres above sea level on alluvial soils. The high elevation brings pronounced day-to-night temperature changes, helping the grapes ripen while retaining aromatic freshness. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified parcel by parcel. Fermentation and maceration last 28–30 days with native yeasts; alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in French oak, followed by 12–18 months of barrel ageing with gentle bâtonnage.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, herb-crusted meats, or rich dishes featuring mushrooms and aubergine. Decant for about an hour before serving to let the wine’s aromas open and its structure soften.

Founded in Mendoza in 1902, Catena Zapata is one of Argentina’s most influential wine families. Nicolás Catena helped pioneer the cultivation of Malbec at high elevations, exploring how cooler conditions could bring greater freshness and complexity to the variety. Catena Alta reflects that focus on expressing the character of Mendoza’s individual vineyard sites.
