Description
Castello di Monsanto’s Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Poggio is a benchmark Tuscan red, crafted from carefully selected Sangiovese with supporting Canaiolo Nero and Colorino. Sourced from one of Chianti Classico’s most respected estates, it combines tradition, precision, and a distinctly elegant expression of the region’s top tier.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a garnet-red hue with a refined, nuanced finish. The nose is inviting and complex, with hibiscus, blackcurrant, smoke, sweet spice, thyme, bay leaf, rosehip, and violet.
On the palate, it is vibrant and structured, with lively tannins and fresh acidity giving shape to the wine’s layered fruit and savory depth. The finish is long and persistent, closing on a pleasant bitter almond note that adds a classic Tuscan signature. It should age beautifully and continue to gain complexity over time.
Production
This Gran Selezione comes from carefully chosen grapes in Tuscany’s Chianti Classico zone, where the combination of hillside vineyards and well-drained soils helps preserve freshness and aromatic detail. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled truncated-cone stainless steel tanks with pumping over and skin contact for around 20–22 days. The wine is then matured for 18–20 months in 500-liter French oak barrels, both new and used, to add structure and polish without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
Ideal with rich Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised beef, roast lamb, game, or mature pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C to let the aromatics and structure fully open. Decanting for about 1 hour is recommended, especially if enjoyed young.
