Castellare di Castellina Il Poggiale Chianti Classico Riserva 2023 is a single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese blended with Canaiolo Nero and Ciliegiolo, combining fresh Tuscan character with polished structure. Founded in 1977, Castellare di Castellina has built its identity around wines that express the land and character of Chianti Classico.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a focused aromatic profile of violet, cherry and mineral nuances. On the palate, fresh fruit and firm structure are balanced by round, well-integrated tannins, leading to a long, silky finish.
Its concentration and structure suggest it can develop further with bottle age, while also offering appealing freshness in its youth.
Production
The grapes come exclusively from the Il Poggiale vineyard in Castellina in Chianti, at 350–400 metres above sea level on a south-west-facing slope. Clay, limestone and silty soils, low yields and vineyard practices that avoid pesticides and herbicides support a concentrated yet fresh expression. After ten days of temperature-controlled skin maceration and two weeks of alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel, malolactic fermentation is completed before the wine matures in French oak barrels for 12–18 months, followed by 12 months in bottle.
Food & Serving
Serve with Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted meats, game or aged pecorino. A serving temperature of 16–18°C should bring out its fruit and savoury detail. Decant for around 30–60 minutes before serving to let the aromas open.
Producer
Founded in 1977, Castellare di Castellina is based in the heart of Chianti Classico and is known for wines that highlight the region’s character. Il Poggiale is the estate’s single-vineyard Riserva, made from grapes grown on vines described as nearly 30 years old. Under the direction of Alessandro Cellai, the wine’s maturation in French oak and bottle is intended to bring Sangiovese’s elegance and complexity into focus.
