Description

Casanova di Neri’s Giovanni Neri Rosso di Montalcino 2024 is a limited-production expression of Sangiovese from the estate’s eponymous single-vineyard cru. Combining the freshness and approachability expected of Rosso di Montalcino with extended maturation in large oak casks, it offers a polished introduction to the character of this renowned Tuscan appellation.

Tasting Notes
Bright ruby in colour, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of ripe cherries, blackcurrants and raspberries, complemented by delicate notes of rose petals, leather and aromatic herbs. On the palate, it is round and generous, with lively acidity and a subtle savoury mineral quality that gives the wine definition. Fine-grained, velvety tannins carry the fruit through to a juicy, well-balanced finish. It is enjoyable in its youth for its freshness and supple texture, while the careful oak maturation and structured Sangiovese profile should allow it to develop additional complexity over the coming years when well stored.

Production
The grapes are sourced from the Giovanni Neri cru in Tuscany and are harvested by hand before undergoing careful selection, including optical sorting. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with naturally occurring yeasts and includes a small proportion of whole clusters. The must is macerated in temperature-controlled, truncated-cone-shaped oak vats, with gentle punch-downs and pump-overs to achieve measured extraction. The wine then matures for 15 months in large oak barrels, allowing its tannins to soften and its flavours to integrate while preserving the freshness of the Sangiovese.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C alongside Tuscan specialities such as pappardelle with wild boar ragù, herb-roasted poultry, grilled sausages or mushroom-based dishes. Its fresh acidity also makes it a natural partner for tomato-based pasta and moderately mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help open the wine and further soften its youthful tannins.

Producer
Founded in 1971, Casanova di Neri is a family-owned estate and one of the respected names of Montalcino, known for its precise and terroir-focused Sangiovese. The Giovanni Neri project comes from a limited-production single vineyard and receives the same meticulous attention associated with the estate’s celebrated Brunello di Montalcino. Around 6,000 bottles are produced annually, underscoring its exclusivity; the wine’s pedigree was also recognised in previous releases, including the 2022 vintage, which received 93 points from James Suckling and 91 from Robert Parker.
