Why shop with us?
Made exclusively from Sangiovese, Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2020 is a structured, age-worthy Tuscan red from one of Italy’s most renowned appellations. Produced in limited quantities only in selected vintages, the Riserva has been part of Caparzo’s story since its debut in 1980.
Tasting Notes
It shows a ruby-red colour, developing garnet tones with age. The expressive, layered nose is marked by wild berries, while the dry, warm palate balances a harmonious texture with firm structure and a taut, persistent finish.
Built for extended cellaring, it should gain further complexity with time in bottle. The producer describes the Riserva as capable of ageing for decades; exact development will depend on storage conditions and the bottle.
Production
The Sangiovese grapes come from Caparzo-owned sites in both the northern and southern parts of Montalcino. The vineyards sit on sandy, stony Pliocene soils with good natural drainage, at elevations of approximately 220 to 270 metres and with mainly south- and southeast-facing exposure. Grapes are harvested by hand. Fermentation takes place under temperature control for around seven days, with délestage and pump-overs, followed by 10 to 15 days of extended skin maceration. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation follows, and the wine is matured in casks for at least two years before further bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Serve with game, roast meats or mature cheeses, whose savoury richness complements the wine’s structure. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant for about an hour before serving to let the aromas open and the tannins settle; older bottles may benefit from gentler handling and a shorter decant.
Producer
Caparzo’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva made its debut in 1980 and is released in limited quantities only in the estate’s selected best vintages. The supplied information identifies oenologist Massimo Bracalente as responsible for selecting the grapes, but provides no further detail on Caparzo’s history or specific achievements for the 2020 vintage.
