Cantina Vecchia Torre Primitivo 2022

Cantina Vecchia Torre Primitivo 2022 is a generous, full-bodied red from Salento in southern Puglia, made exclusively from Primitivo grapes—the Italian counterpart to Zinfandel. Produced by a respected cooperative founded in 1959, it combines ripe Mediterranean fruit with gentle oak ageing for a style that is both powerful and polished.

Tasting Notes
The wine has an intense ruby-red colour. Its expressive bouquet reveals ripe plum and cherry alongside warming spice, with subtle hints of tobacco and vanilla from a portion of the wine’s time in French barriques. On the palate, it is dry, juicy and well balanced, with soft, velvety tannins and a rounded texture. Ripe red and dark fruit carry through to a pleasantly long finish, supported by a touch of oak spice. Enjoyable now for its approachable fruit and supple structure, it should develop well over the next few years when stored in a cool, dark place.

Production
The Primitivo grapes are grown in Salento on moderately deep alluvial soils composed of sand, silt and clay, with calcareous areas that contribute depth and structure. After careful selection, the grapes are destemmed without pressing and macerated on the skins for 6–7 days at a controlled temperature of 24–25°C. Part of the wine is matured in French barriques, while the remainder rests in stainless-steel tanks, preserving freshness while adding texture, spice and elegance.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally around 18°C. Its ripe fruit and supple tannins make it a natural partner for grilled beef, game and mature cheeses, while its generous character also suits rich pasta dishes, hearty meat sauces and spicy Mediterranean cuisine. The wine is approachable straight from the bottle, but a short decant of 20–30 minutes can help open its aromas and soften the oak influence.

Cantina Vecchia Torre was founded in 1959 as a cooperative of winegrowers based around Leverano in the province of Lecce. The winery has become an established name in Puglia, reflecting the warm, sun-drenched character of Salento while working with local growers and traditional regional varieties. Its Primitivo showcases the area’s capacity to produce richly flavoured reds with a balance of Mediterranean generosity and contemporary polish.
