Brezza Barolo Castellero 2021

Brezza Barolo Castellero 2021 is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s more distinctive vineyard sites. Castellero’s sandy, ancient marine soils lend the wine real structure and tension, and while it can be a little firm in youth, it is built for graceful development in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a garnet-toned red with the translucent brightness typical of Nebbiolo. The nose is likely to unfold slowly, with aromas of red cherry, rose petals, dried herbs, and subtle earthy notes, supported by hints of spice and licorice. On the palate, this Barolo is structured and layered, with firm tannins, lively acidity, and a mineral edge that reflects the sandy Castellero terroir. It may feel slightly unyielding when young, but with time it should gain harmony and reveal deeper complexity. Best enjoyed from around its sixth year onward, with excellent aging potential in strong vintages.

Production
Castellero is shaped by the Arenarie di Diano, a sandstone-rich geological formation from the Elveziano period, formed by sediment from turbid underwater flows. Compared with sites like Cannubi, the soils here are sandier, which tends to produce wines with impressive structure and energy. The vintage is crafted from Nebbiolo grown in Piedmont and vinified in the traditional Barolo style to preserve site character and aging potential.

Food & Serving
This Barolo pairs beautifully with rich Piedmontese dishes such as brasato al Barolo, truffle risotto, and tajarin with meat ragù, as well as roasted game, braised beef, and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to help soften the tannins and open the aromatics.
