Bollinger La Grande Année 2008 is a richly textured vintage Champagne, balancing the house’s distinctive vinous character with vibrant fruit and precise acidity. It was the first Grande Année released in Bollinger’s new bottle, inspired by its 1846 design and featuring a narrower neck intended to encourage slower development in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
Golden in appearance, it opens with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, ripe lemon, honey cake, warm biscuits and dried white flowers, followed by delicate notes of walnut and fino sherry. The palate is full and broad, with a refined mousse, impressive concentration, lively acidity and an elegant interplay of Bollinger’s oxidative character and fresh fruit. Its long, precise finish is notably chalky.
This is a Champagne with considerable ageing potential: it already shows promise, but further bottle ageing should bring added complexity and integration. It was disgorged by hand in July 2018 and finished with a dosage of 8 g/L.
Food & Serving
Enjoy at around 10–12°C, allowing it a little time in the glass to reveal its layers. It pairs particularly well with roast chicken, lobster, scallops, aged hard cheeses or dishes featuring mushrooms and toasted nuts. Decanting is optional; if serving young, a brief rest in a decanter can help open the wine, though careful pouring into a generous Champagne glass is also an excellent approach.
Producer
Founded in 1829, Bollinger is one of Champagne’s historic houses, based in Aÿ and known for a powerful, structured style that often rewards time in the cellar. La Grande Année is the house’s vintage prestige cuvée, made only in years considered worthy of expressing the character of the harvest.
