Description
Bodega Chacra Cincuenta y Cinco Pinot Noir 2022 is a refined, single-vineyard Pinot from old, ungrafted vines planted in 1955 in Patagonia’s Río Negro Valley. Named after the year of planting (“Cincuenta y Cinco”), it captures the purity, tension and elegance that have made Chacra Argentina’s benchmark for world‑class Pinot Noir. Combining delicacy with depth, this wine showcases one of South America’s most compelling terroirs for the grape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Cincuenta y Cinco Pinot Noir is translucent ruby with a luminous, garnet edge, hinting at both finesse and concentration. The nose is strikingly perfumed, with lifted aromas of wild strawberries, crushed blueberries and ripe cherries wrapped in notes of citrus zest, violets and rose petals. Subtle layers of smoke, game, dried herbs and a saline, almost iodine-like minerality add complexity as it opens.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet remarkably intense, with a fine, linear drive and a beautiful sense of energy. Juicy red berry fruit—strawberry, red cherry and cranberry—meets darker blue fruit tones, while undertones of wet stone, subtle spice and a whisper of forest floor give depth. The tannins are ultra-fine and polished, creamy yet firm enough to provide structure, and the acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, stretching the finish out in a long, precise line. While already seductive in its youth, this vintage has the balance and tension to develop gracefully for 8–12 years from release, gaining more savory and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
Cincuenta y Cinco comes from a historic, biodynamically farmed vineyard in the Río Negro region of Patagonia, planted with ungrafted Pinot Noir vines in 1955. Here, the combination of high luminosity, cool nights, dry climate and alluvial soils rich in sand, pebbles and minerals creates an ideal microclimate for finely etched, aromatic Pinot. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, ensuring careful selection in the vineyard. Vinification is carried out with whole-cluster fermentation at very low temperatures to emphasize the wine’s floral and aromatic character while preserving freshness and purity. Aging takes place over 11 months in a mix of vessels: approximately 50% in cement tanks for vibrancy and transparency of fruit, 45% in used French oak barrels (second to fourth use) for gentle texture and nuance, and about 5% in clay amphora to enhance minerality and finesse. The result is an unforced, terroir-driven wine that reflects both its old vines and its singular Patagonian origin.
Food & Serving
This elegant yet structured Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with refined dishes that echo its balance of delicacy and depth: roast duck with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, veal tenderloin, or game birds such as quail and partridge. It also shines with earthy plates like wild mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, grilled salmon or tuna, and aged semi-hard cheeses. Serve at 14–16°C (57–60°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. Decanting for 30–45 minutes before serving is recommended in the wine’s youth to allow the subtle floral, mineral and savory notes to fully emerge.
Producer
Bodega Chacra was founded by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, a member of the family behind Sassicaia, one of Italy’s most famous fine wines. Set in the remote Río Negro Valley of Patagonia, Chacra was created with a singular focus: to express the character of old-vine, ungrafted Pinot Noir in a pristine, low‑intervention, biodynamic environment. The estate farms historic vineyards dating back as far as 1932 and has become a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in Argentina. Since 2017, Chacra has collaborated with renowned Meursault producer Guy Roulot, further elevating its precision and finesse. Widely regarded as Argentina’s leading Pinot Noir producer—and a regular recipient of top international scores, including multiple 98–100 point ratings—Bodega Chacra has secured its place among the Southern Hemisphere’s most important fine wine addresses, even topping James Suckling’s “Top 100 Wines of 2020” list.
