Bertram-Baltes Ahrweiler Spätburgunder 2021 is a precise and characterful Pinot Noir from the Ahr, shaped by the region’s distinctive slate and volcanic-influenced soils. Sourced from selected parcels in the Rosenthal and Forstberg vineyards, it combines dark fruit, earthy intensity and a naturally textured style that reflects Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes’ low-intervention approach.

Tasting Notes
The wine appears medium-intense ruby red with a bright rim. Its aromatic profile is expressive, dark and slightly wild, with notes of elderberry, cassis and ripe dark berries complemented by earthy, savoury nuances. On the palate, it is structured yet vibrant, with refreshing acidity, fine tannins and a layered fruit character. The partial use of whole clusters adds lift and complexity, while the unfiltered presentation preserves the wine’s natural texture and detail. With its concentration and balanced structure, the 2021 vintage should develop gracefully over the next several years.

Production
The fruit comes from selected parcels in the Rosenthal and Forstberg vineyards, where sandstone, clay, quartzite and grauwacke create a complex, tension-filled terroir. The vineyards were planted with high-quality Pinot Noir clones during the 1990s. Grapes were selectively harvested by hand, with approximately 70% destemmed and the remainder retained as whole clusters. Fermentation took place spontaneously, using a mixture of lightly crushed berries and whole bunches. The wine was matured in used Spessart oak barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered, and received only a light addition of sulphur before bottling.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 14–16°C, allowing the wine to express its freshness and aromatic complexity without becoming overly warm. It pairs well with roast poultry, duck, game birds, mushroom dishes, roasted root vegetables and gently spiced pork. A short decant of 30–60 minutes can help open the wine, although older bottles or particularly delicate servings may be better poured directly from the bottle.
