Benanti Etna Bianco Superiore Pietra Marina 2021 is a distinctive Carricante white that captures the character of Etna’s high-altitude volcanic vineyards. Made from old bush-trained vines, some ungrafted, it combines freshness and mineral tension with the structure to develop in bottle. The wine reflects the Benanti family’s work on Etna since 1988 and has earned recognition including 5 Bibenda Grappoli and 3 Veronelli Gold Stars.

Tasting Notes
Straw yellow with lively green highlights, Pietra Marina opens with an intense bouquet of apple and orange blossom. Its palate is dry and harmonious, with bright acidity carrying the flavours through to a lingering finish marked by anise and almond.

Production
The Carricante comes from vineyards in Viagrande, around 950 metres above sea level, where sandy, mineral-rich volcanic soils and sharp mountain temperature shifts encourage slow ripening and aromatic definition. The old bush-trained vines are farmed organically and sustainably, and the grapes are harvested late, toward the end of October. Whole bunches are gently pressed, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel. The wine then matures in tank for at least a year and spends a further 12 months in bottle before release.

Food & Serving
Its lively acidity and mineral character make it a natural match for seafood, shellfish, grilled white fish, and dishes with herbs or citrus. Try it with Sicilian-style pasta with sardines or simply prepared vegetables. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C; a short time in the glass can help reveal its aromas, while extended decanting is generally unnecessary.

Benanti is a family estate whose modern story on Etna began in 1988. The family’s focus on the mountain’s native varieties and distinct vineyard sites has helped establish its wines as expressions of Etna’s volcanic landscape. Pietra Marina is one of the estate’s notable Carricante wines, recognised by Bibenda and Veronelli, and is reported to have the potential to evolve for more than a decade in bottle.
