Description
Belle Glos Glasir Holt Chardonnay 2022 is a coastal California Chardonnay that marries power, freshness and elegance in a remarkably polished style. Sourced from a single, wind-swept vineyard near the Pacific Ocean in the Santa Rita Hills, it showcases ripe, golden fruit wrapped in vibrant acidity and a distinctly saline, mineral edge. Crafted by Joe Wagner—renowned for expressive, site-driven wines—this Chardonnay captures the character of Glasir Holt Vineyard with striking clarity and precision.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Glasir Holt Chardonnay shows warm, golden hues that hint at its richness and concentration. The nose is inviting and layered, with aromas of buttery tart crust, lightly toasted marshmallow, banana cream pie and crème brûlée, lifted by fresher notes of crisp apple and a subtle coastal breeze of minerality.
On the palate, the wine is generous yet finely balanced. Flavours of ripe melon, crunchy apple and citrus are interwoven with tones of butter-baked brioche, vanilla cream and a gentle toastiness from the French oak. The texture is creamy but never heavy, kept in perfect check by a bright, mouth-watering acidity and a chalky, mineral backbone. The finish is long, harmonious and slightly saline, suggesting excellent drinking now with the potential to evolve beautifully over the next 5–7 years, gaining extra complexity and nutty, honeyed nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Glasir Holt Vineyard sits on the northern edge of the Santa Rita Hills in California, just inland from the cool Pacific Ocean. Here, the combination of a high pH, limestone-rich subsoils, cool daytime temperatures and even cooler nights creates an ideal environment for Chardonnay, delivering both ripeness and piercing freshness. The grapes are hand-harvested to preserve fruit integrity and carefully sorted before fermentation. Vinification takes place in a mix of 10% concrete tanks and 90% new French oak barrels, a choice that enhances texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months, allowing the oak to knit into the wine and develop those signature notes of crème brûlée, brioche and subtle toast while preserving the vineyard’s pure, mineral-driven profile.
Food & Serving
This is a luxurious yet finely structured Chardonnay that shines at the table. Pair it with lobster, grilled halibut, rich fish dishes in butter or cream sauces, roast chicken with mushrooms, truffle-inflected poultry, creamy pasta dishes and firm, aged cheeses. It is also impressive enough to enjoy on its own as a contemplative glass. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance richness and freshness. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, will help the wine unfurl its layered aromas and creamy, mineral complexity.
Producer
Belle Glos is part of the Wagner family legacy in California, with winemaker Joe Wagner—grandson of Charlie Wagner of Caymus fame—at the helm. While Belle Glos built its reputation on expressive, single-vineyard Pinot Noirs along the California coast, the Glasir Holt Chardonnay represents an exciting extension of that same vineyard-focused philosophy. The Glasir Holt site, originally considered for Pinot Noir, revealed an extraordinary aptitude for Chardonnay in a specific limestone-rich parcel, inspiring a dedicated bottling that quickly gained attention for its precision and depth. Today, Belle Glos is recognized as a significant player in premium coastal wines, celebrated for its ability to capture the distinct voice of each vineyard, with Glasir Holt standing out as one of the clearest, most articulate expressions of cool-climate Californian Chardonnay.
