Description
Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Pinot Noir 2022 is a bold, luxurious expression of Californian Pinot Noir, crafted in the unmistakable Belle Glos style. Sourced from the historic Clark & Telephone vineyard near the Pacific-cooled Santa Maria Valley, this wine delivers plush fruit, generous oak, and a velvety texture that has made the label a favorite among Pinot lovers. Named for the old telephone poles that once lined the property, this site has a long-standing reputation for producing intensely flavored, characterful Pinot Noir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clark & Telephone shows a deep ruby to garnet hue, richer and more saturated than many classic Pinot Noirs. The nose is immediately inviting, with ripe dark cherries, black raspberries, and strawberry compote layered over notes of vanilla bean, cocoa, baking spice, and a hint of cola and cedar.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, opulent Pinot Noir with Belle Glos’ signature richness. Juicy black cherry, ripe plum, and boysenberry meet caramel, sweet spice, mocha, and a touch of toasted oak. The texture is lush and creamy, framed by polished tannins and a supple mouthfeel, with enough acidity to keep the wine vibrant rather than heavy. The finish is long and smooth, echoing dark fruit, chocolate, and a touch of warm spice. Enjoy it now for its exuberant fruit and plush texture, or cellar for 5–8 years to allow the oak and primary fruit to further integrate and develop more savory complexity.
Production
The Clark & Telephone vineyard sits near the cool Santa Maria Valley in California, where ocean breezes and fog from the Pacific help preserve freshness in the fruit while still allowing for full ripeness. The vines are rooted in well-draining, sandy loam soils that naturally limit vigor and contribute to concentration in the grapes. Harvest is typically done in the cool hours, with careful selection to ensure only fully ripe, perfectly healthy Pinot Noir clusters are used. In the cellar, the must is fermented in small lots to maximize color and flavor extraction, with a focus on achieving Belle Glos’ trademark depth and silkiness. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, to impart layers of vanilla, spice, and toast while rounding out the tannins and enhancing the wine’s luxurious texture.
Food & Serving
This generous, fruit-driven Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with richer dishes that can stand up to its intensity. Think roasted duck with cherry glaze, herb-crusted pork loin, lamb chops, grilled salmon, or mushroom risotto with truffle. It also works well with burgers, barbecued ribs with a sweet-smoky sauce, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at around 14–16°C (57–61°F) to keep the freshness and avoid any alcohol warmth dominating the palate. A short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up its aromatic layers and soften the oak influence, especially in its youth.
Producer
Belle Glos was founded by Joe Wagner, a fifth-generation member of the Wagner family, renowned for creating some of Napa and California’s most recognizable wines. Named in honor of his grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, the brand focuses exclusively on single-vineyard Pinot Noir from prime coastal sites across California. Belle Glos quickly earned a reputation for a distinctive, fuller-bodied style of Pinot Noir—lush, dark-fruited, and lavishly textured—standing out in a category often defined by delicacy. The iconic wax-dipped bottles and consistently strong critical and consumer ratings, especially on platforms like Vivino, have cemented Belle Glos as one of California’s most sought-after modern Pinot Noir producers.
