Tasting Notes
In the glass, Belle Glos Balade Pinot Noir 2023 shows a deep, saturated ruby to blood-red hue, unusually intense for Pinot Noir and a clear sign of its concentration. The nose is generous and inviting, with ripe blackberries, dark cherry compote and raspberry tart layered with floral notes of rose petals and violets, along with hints of honeysuckle, cola, baking spice and a touch of vanilla from its time in French oak. On the palate, this is a plush, full-throttle style of Pinot Noir, combining juicy richness with coastal freshness. Expect flavors of baked black cherries, ripe strawberries and cranberry, supported by a core of dark berry fruit and subtle notes of cocoa, sweet spice and creamy vanilla. The texture is smooth and velvety, with well-integrated tannins and a lively acidity that keeps the wine lifted rather than heavy. While already accessible and seductive in its youth, the structure and concentration suggest a comfortable drinking window of 5–8 years from vintage, during which it will gain even more complexity and polish.

Production
The Balade vineyard benefits from a cool, maritime-influenced terroir, situated close enough to the Pacific Ocean to receive brisk, moderating breezes yet with ample sunshine to fully ripen Pinot Noir. The cooler temperatures keep the berries small and skins thick, concentrating flavor, color and aroma while preserving natural acidity. For the 2023 vintage, winemaker Joe Wagner and the Belle Glos team hand-harvested the fruit at optimal ripeness, then fully destemmed the clusters before fermentation to emphasize pure, plush fruit character over stem tannin. Fermentation is carefully temperature-controlled to extract color and flavor without harshness, followed by 12 months of aging in French oak barrels, around 60% of which are new. This significant proportion of new oak adds layers of spice, structure and creaminess, while still allowing the coastal Pinot fruit to shine through.
