Description
Argiolas Costera 2023 is a vibrant expression of Cannonau di Sardegna, Sardinia’s distinctive interpretation of Grenache. This richly flavoured red combines Cannonau with Bovale and Carignan, bringing together ripe Mediterranean fruit, gentle spice and a pleasingly fresh finish. It offers an approachable introduction to one of Sardinia’s most important native red wines.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, the wine opens with aromas of ripe red and dark berries, plum, Mediterranean herbs and subtle spice. On the palate, it is generous and rounded, with flavours of blackberry, cherry and soft plum supported by smooth tannins and balanced acidity. A touch of savoury, earthy character adds depth, while the finish remains fresh and pleasantly persistent.
Costera is enjoyable in its youth, when its fruit-forward character is at its most expressive. It can also develop additional savoury complexity over the next few years when stored in a cool, dark cellar.
Production
The grapes are grown in Sardinia’s warm Mediterranean climate, where abundant sunshine encourages full ripeness while coastal influences and elevation help preserve freshness. Cannonau, Bovale and Carignan are harvested at optimum maturity and vinified separately or in carefully managed lots before blending. Fermentation takes place under controlled conditions with skin contact to extract colour, aroma and flavour, followed by maturation designed to preserve the wine’s lively fruit and supple structure.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C, allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass and reveal its herbal and spicy notes. It pairs particularly well with grilled lamb, roast pork, sausages, hearty pasta dishes, mushroom ragù and mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential for the 2023 vintage, although 20–30 minutes in a decanter can help open the wine when serving it alongside a meal.
Producer
Founded in 1918, Argiolas is one of Sardinia’s most respected family-owned wineries and has played a major role in showcasing the island’s native grape varieties internationally. Based near Serdiana in southern Sardinia, the estate combines generations of local knowledge with a modern approach to sustainable vineyard management and winemaking. Its work with varieties such as Cannonau, Vermentino and Carignano has helped establish Argiolas as a leading ambassador for Sardinian wine.
