Description

Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2020 captures the wild, coastal character that has made this AVA one of California’s most exciting Pinot regions. Sourced from two of the coolest, most marine-influenced corners of the Sonoma Coast, it balances purity of fruit with a finely etched, savory backbone. This bottling showcases Anthill Farms’ hallmark style: elegant, site-driven Pinot that speaks clearly of its windswept, Pacific-cooled origins.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a luminous ruby color with translucent edges, hinting at its finesse and delicacy. The nose is vivid and lifted, offering red cherry, wild strawberry, and cranberry, layered with rose petal, orange peel, and subtle notes of dried herbs, forest floor, and a touch of coastal salinity. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and finely textured, with lively acidity and silky, well-integrated tannins. Bright red fruits are framed by savory spice, tea leaf, and a gentle earthiness that evolves with air. The cool-climate origins show through in its focus and energy rather than weight, leading to a long, precise finish with a mineral-tinged lift. Enjoyable now with some air, it should evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more complexity and tertiary nuance.

Production
The 2020 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is drawn from vineyards in two distinct but equally cool zones: low-lying sites west of Sebastopol on the edge of the Petaluma Gap, and higher-elevation plantings on the first and second ridges inland from the Pacific. These areas share a powerful influence from cold marine air and persistent fog, which slows ripening well into October, preserving acidity and aromatic detail. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at modest sugar levels to favor freshness and balance, then gently destemmed (often with a portion of whole clusters) and fermented with minimal intervention to capture each site’s character. Aging in mostly neutral French oak allows the purity of Pinot Noir (Pinot Nero) and the coastal terroir to take center stage, rather than heavy barrel influence.

Food & Serving
This Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is an excellent partner for dishes that echo its balance of delicacy and savoriness—think herb-roasted chicken, duck breast with cherry or berry compote, grilled salmon, seared tuna, or mushroom risotto. It also complements charcuterie, mild to medium cheeses, and dishes featuring fresh herbs and earthy components. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) for the most expressive aromatics. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up and reveals its floral, spicy nuances, especially in its youth.

Producer
Anthill Farms Winery was founded by a trio of friends and former colleagues who set out to craft nuanced, small-lot wines from some of the finest cool-climate vineyards in Northern California. From their early days, they have focused on Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast and surrounding regions, looking to express each site’s individuality rather than a heavy-handed house style. Their work with low-yielding, coastal vineyards and a restrained, hands-off approach in the cellar has earned Anthill Farms a reputation as one of the most thoughtful, terroir-driven producers in California Pinot Noir. Today, they are recognized for elevating the profile of cooler, wind-swept subzones of the Sonoma Coast, helping to define the region as a benchmark for elegant, site-expressive New World Pinot.
