Description
Alois Lageder Lindenburg Lagrein 2021 is a characterful red from one of Alto Adige’s most respected names, showcasing the depth and elegance this ancient local grape can achieve. Sourced from the historic Lindenburg estate near Bolzano, it balances generous, dark fruit with freshness and poise. With more than six centuries of history behind the Lagrein grape and vines replanted here in the 1950s, this bottling brings together tradition, precision and true cellar‑worthy structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lindenburg Lagrein 2021 typically shows a deep, intense ruby to purple hue, with an almost opaque core that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe blackberries and mulberries meet dark cherries, violets and subtle notes of cocoa, licorice and spice, often accompanied by a touch of graphite and fresh herbs.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and mouthfilling, yet remains poised and elegant. Dark berry and plum flavors are framed by vibrant acidity and firmly knit, ripe tannins. You can expect a long, focused finish with hints of bitter chocolate, black pepper and a stony, mineral edge reflecting its origin. Thanks to its structure, freshness and clarity of fruit, this Lagrein has excellent aging potential; stored well, it should evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining more savory, truffle and leather nuances while the tannins soften and integrate further.
Production
The Lindenburg vineyard lies on deep, sandy soils in the warm Bolzano basin of Trentino–Alto Adige, an area known as one of Italy’s hottest city zones in summer. Here, Alois Lageder preserves the traditional pergola training system, which shades the clusters from intense heat and sun, protecting freshness and aromatic complexity in the grapes. The Lagrein is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the must is typically fermented in temperature‑controlled vessels to extract color and aroma without harsh tannins, followed by maturation in carefully chosen barrels and/or large casks to refine structure, add gentle spice and preserve the wine’s clear, precise profile. The result is a Lagrein that marries richness with a distinctive elegance and a strong sense of place.
Food & Serving
Alois Lageder Lindenburg Lagrein 2021 is an excellent partner for hearty, flavorful dishes such as braised beef, ossobuco, slow‑cooked lamb, venison and other game, as well as rich stews and roasted root vegetables. It also works beautifully with mature mountain cheeses, mushroom‑based dishes and charcuterie. Serve at around 16–18 °C (61–64 °F) to highlight its fruit and spice. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to let the aromas open and the tannins relax.
Producer
The Alois Lageder estate is a benchmark producer in Trentino–Alto Adige, with a family history in wine that stretches back to the 19th century. Based in Magrè, the Lageders are known for their pioneering work in quality-focused viticulture, including the use of biodynamic principles and a strong emphasis on expressing individual sites. Their wines have helped define the modern identity of Alto Adige, showcasing the region’s ability to produce both mountain‑fresh whites and deeply characterful reds like Lagrein. Over the decades, Alois Lageder has earned an international reputation for precision, sustainability and innovation, making the Lindenburg Lagrein one of the reference points for this historic local variety.
