Description

Allegrini Valpolicella Classico Superiore La Grola is a poised Veneto red made from Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, combining generous dark fruit with freshness and a finely polished texture. From the celebrated La Grola vineyard, it reflects the Allegrini family’s long-standing role in shaping the reputation of Valpolicella; the estate dates back to 1854.

Tasting Notes
A deep ruby-red colour leads into an expressive bouquet of blackberry, cherry and violet, with hints of vanilla, tobacco and dark chocolate. The palate is full and well defined, balancing ripe fruit and lively freshness with velvety tannins. A persistent finish brings together spice and mineral notes. Its structure and balanced acidity make it enjoyable in its youth, while careful cellaring should allow the flavours to develop further over the next several years.

Production
The La Grola vineyard lies in Valpolicella Classica, where southeast-facing vines grow in stony, calcareous clay soils with little organic matter. The estate describes hand harvesting and careful bunch selection, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel with gentle extraction. The wine is matured for 16 months in a combination of small and large oak casks, then rests in bottle for a further 10 months. These production details are provided for the La Grola wine generally and are not specific to the 2023 vintage.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C with roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, game, or dishes featuring mushrooms and herbs. Its ripe fruit and supple tannins also suit aged cheeses. Consider opening the bottle 30–60 minutes before serving to let its aromas unfold; decanting is optional.

Producer
Founded in 1854, Allegrini is a family estate closely associated with Valpolicella and the wider Veneto wine region. The La Grola vineyard and wine express the family’s ambition to showcase the area’s distinctive sites and grapes. The label has received notable recognition, including Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso and a 93-point rating from James Suckling; these accolades refer to reported past releases, not specifically the 2023 vintage.
