Aldo Conterno’s Barbera d’Alba Conca Tre Pile 2023 is a supple, expressive red made exclusively from Barbera grown in the celebrated Bussia Soprana area of Monforte d’Alba. Sourced from the Conca Tre Pile hillside vineyard, it combines ripe fruit and natural freshness with a year of oak ageing—a polished expression of a historic Barolo-country estate founded in 1969.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackberry and cherry, followed by subtle hints of vanilla and liquorice. The palate is long and velvety, with a well-defined structure, gentle tannins and the lively freshness characteristic of Barbera.
Its fruit, balance and oak influence make it enjoyable now, while its structure offers scope for further development in bottle. Exact cellaring potential will depend on storage conditions and personal preference.
Production
The Barbera comes from the sloping Conca Tre Pile vineyard in Bussia Soprana, where vines averaging around 45 years old grow in calcareous clay soils. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected, then macerated on their skins in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for approximately eight to ten days. After resting in steel, the wine matures for 12 months in oak barrels and is bottled without filtration or clarification.
Food & Serving
Pair it with roast pork, grilled sausages, mushroom dishes or aged cheeses; its freshness also makes a natural match for tomato-based pasta. Serve at around 16–18°C. A short rest in the glass should be enough, though opening the bottle 20–30 minutes before serving can allow its aromas to unfold.
Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno was founded in 1969 in Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of Piemonte’s Langhe. The estate is closely associated with the Bussia Soprana hillside and its historic vineyards, drawing on the region’s winemaking traditions while earning recognition well beyond the area. Its careful attention to vineyard fruit and measured oak ageing is reflected in this Barbera’s concentrated yet supple style.
