Description

Adega do Vulcão’s Pé do Monte is a flagship white from Pico Island, made from Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico. Its reputation was further established when the 2020 vintage was named Portugal’s best dry white wine at Essência do Vinho – Porto 2023.

Production
The grapes grow on the basalt slopes below Pico’s extinct volcano, in the island’s characteristic Lajidos do Criação Velha terroir, where old stone walls shelter the vines. They come from 70–90-year-old, ungrafted vines, with the blend comprising 80% Arinto dos Açores and 10% each Verdelho and Terrantez do Pico. The fruit is selectively hand-harvested; further vinification details are not available.

Food & Serving
Try it with grilled fish, shellfish or simply prepared seafood, whose freshness can complement the wine’s Atlantic-island origins. Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C. Decanting is not essential, though a brief rest in the glass can allow the wine to open.

Adega do Vulcão is the producer behind Pé do Monte, a wine widely regarded as a reference for the wines of the Azores. The recognition awarded to its 2020 vintage at Essência do Vinho – Porto 2023 brought particular attention to the wine on Portugal’s leading wine stage.
