2025 Chenin Luddite Südafrika 0,75l

Made in a small run of just 3,300 bottles, the 2025 Luddite Chenin Blanc is a distinctive, textural take on the grape from Bot River. Its 10.7% alcohol, extended skin contact and restrained use of the cellar set it apart from more overtly fruit-driven Chenin Blancs.

Tasting Notes
The nose opens with yellow plum, apple and pear, followed by honeyed flowers and a pronounced herbal, gently spicy edge. On the palate, gooseberry and citrus meet a taut lime-like freshness, while the 20 days of skin contact bring subtle phenolic grip and a light bitterness. Lees work adds depth, and a delicate saline note carries through the finish.

Production
The fruit comes from Luddite Wines’ own House Block and Dog Block vineyards in Bot River, harvested on 3 and 7 February 2025. The grapes were destemmed, lightly crushed and spontaneously fermented in open vats, with the cap punched down twice daily. After 20 days on the skins, the wine was pressed into used barrels with as much lees as possible and regularly bâtonnage-stirred during maturation. Food & Serving
A food-friendly wine for grilled fish, turbot, squid or scallops, as well as poultry and veal. Its freshness and texture should also suit artichokes, fennel, grilled cabbage, mushrooms, goat’s cheese and lightly aged hard cheeses. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C; a brief airing in the glass should be sufficient.

Luddite Wines is based in Bot River, where Niels and Penny Verburg have developed a small-scale, individual approach centred on fruit from their own vineyards, spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention in the cellar.
