Description
The 2023 Château d’Yquem is one of the world’s most distinguished sweet wines, produced in Sauternes and recognised since the 1855 Classification as a unique Premier Cru Supérieur. Made from meticulously selected botrytised grapes, it combines remarkable richness with refreshing acidity, aromatic precision and exceptional ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
Deeply concentrated yet wonderfully lifted, the 2023 vintage opens with expressive aromas of ripe apricot, white peach, mango, pineapple and candied citrus. Floral notes of orange blossom and acacia accompany honey, vanilla and delicate exotic spices, while aeration reveals hints of saffron, beeswax and subtle toasted nuances. On the palate, it is dense and creamy, with layers of ripe stone fruit, candied orange, pineapple and honey balanced by vibrant, precise acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, complex and harmonious, with sweetness that remains fresh rather than heavy. Although impressive in its youth, this is a wine built for several decades of bottle development, gradually gaining notes of saffron, beeswax, candied citrus and spice.
Production
Château d’Yquem’s vineyards are shaped by a varied terroir of gravel, clay and limestone, together with Sauternes’ distinctive humid microclimate. These conditions encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, which concentrates the grapes’ sugars, acids and aromatic compounds. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand over multiple passes through the vineyard, with only grapes reaching the desired level of botrytis and concentration selected. Following fermentation, the wine is traditionally matured in French oak, adding structure, spice and complexity while preserving its fruit and freshness.
Food & Serving
Château d’Yquem can be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative dessert wine, but it is also a classic partner for foie gras, roasted duck liver, lobster and langoustines. Its balance of sweetness and acidity works particularly well with gently spiced Asian cuisine, while Roquefort and other fine blue cheeses provide a savoury counterpoint. For dessert, choose preparations that are not overly sweet, such as apricot tart or a citrus-based dessert. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C; decanting is not essential for a young vintage, although a careful decant or generous time in the glass can help reveal its aromatic complexity.
Producer
Château d’Yquem occupies an unrivalled position in Sauternes and has held the distinction of Premier Cru Supérieur since the 1855 Classification. Its reputation is built on exceptionally strict grape selection, hand harvesting and a distinctive style that unites concentration with freshness and longevity. Widely regarded as an icon of Bordeaux and one of the world’s greatest sweet wines, Château d’Yquem produces wines intended not only to impress in their youth but also to evolve gracefully over many decades.
