The 2022 Luddite Shiraz is a single-vineyard wine from the Old Block and Young Block parcels in Bot River, made from the Verburg family’s own vineyards. It combines dark, generous fruit with the region’s distinctive herbal and peppery character, while restrained use of new oak keeps the focus on the wine’s savoury side.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with dark plum, mulberry and black cherry, followed by lavender, wild flowers, fynbos, garrigue and black pepper. On the palate, juicy dark fruit meets lively acidity and firm tannins; olive, herbs and spices become more prominent through the finish, with a subtle saline note adding contrast. The wine is concentrated yet structured, rather than jammy or heavy.
Production
The fruit comes exclusively from Luddite’s Old Block and Young Block vineyards in Bot River. The healthy 2022 crop was picked in several passes as the grapes reached aromatic maturity. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks, with regular pump-overs, deliberately lower fermentation temperatures and extended skin contact. After malolactic fermentation, the wine spent 24 months in French oak, just 10% of it new. The final blend is predominantly Shiraz, with small additions of Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache Noir. Production totalled 10,100 bottles and 502 magnums.
Food & Serving
Serve with lamb rack, Côte de Boeuf, duck breast, game or charcoal-grilled meats. Dishes seasoned with rosemary, black olives, pepper or Mediterranean herbs will echo the wine’s savoury notes; slow-braised lamb with herbs is another fitting match. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for about an hour before drinking.
Producer
Luddite’s Shiraz is made from vineyards belonging to Niels, Penny and Alice Verburg in Bot River. The producer’s style, as reflected in this vintage, pairs Shiraz’s power with freshness, firm structure and a pronounced herbal, olive-scented character, rather than relying on heavy new-oak influence. Further details about the winery’s history or specific achievements were not provided.
