Description

CLIO 2022 is a bold, concentrated red from Bodegas El Nido in Jumilla, blending 70% Monastrell with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 2002 by the Gil family, Jorge Ordóñez and Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, the project puts Jumilla’s signature grape at the heart of a powerful, modern Spanish wine.

Tasting Notes
The nose is intense and expressive, with blackberry, blueberry, blackcurrant and dark cherry layered with liquorice, cocoa, espresso, dried herbs and smoky, toasted spice from oak ageing. Full-bodied and densely textured, it brings ripe dark fruit, Mediterranean spice and fine-grained tannins together in a long finish marked by dark chocolate, coffee and liquorice. The 2022 is already generous and concentrated, yet its tannins provide structure for further bottle ageing. Enjoy it now after giving it time to breathe, or cellar it for a few years to allow the fruit, oak and tannins to integrate further.

Production
The wine comes from Bodegas El Nido in Jumilla, in southeastern Spain. Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon are vinified separately before being blended, then aged for 23 months in new French and American oak barriques. The available information does not specify the vineyard’s soil, harvesting methods or detailed vinification techniques.

Food & Serving
Pair CLIO with boldly flavoured dishes such as ribeye, beef tenderloin, lamb, game or slow-braised beef. Its dark fruit and spice also work well with charcoal-grilled meat, rosemary, black pepper and aged Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C and decant for one to two hours before drinking; a large glass will help the wine open up.

Producer
Bodegas El Nido was established in 2002 by the Gil family in partnership with wine importer Jorge Ordóñez and Australian oenologist Chris Ringland. Based in Jumilla, the winery focuses on Monastrell, the grape central to the region’s identity. CLIO offers a Monastrell-led counterpart to the estate’s flagship El Nido, in which Cabernet Sauvignon takes the larger share.
