Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Sangiovese Superiore shows a bright, medium-deep ruby color with garnet reflections toward the rim. The nose opens with lively red fruits—think sour cherry, wild strawberry and red currant—interwoven with notes of dried flowers, subtle spice, a hint of blood orange and a gentle undertone of woodland herbs and light tobacco from the extra aging. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, offering a pure, juicy core of red cherry and raspberry supported by fresh acidity and fine, chalky tannins. Nuances of violet, savory herbs, licorice and a touch of earth add complexity without overwhelming the wine’s vibrant fruit character. The finish is long, clean and slightly saline, making it both food-friendly and satisfying on its own. Enjoyable now for its energy and clarity, the 2022 vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–7 years, developing more tertiary notes of leather, dried fruit and spice.

Production
Il Graben del Trinzano is crafted from Sangiovese grown in the hills of Romagna, where calcareous-clay soils and good elevation help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. The vineyards benefit from a mild Adriatic influence and significant diurnal temperature swings, which encourage slow, even ripening and fine tannin development. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to allow careful selection of bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels to protect the delicate fruit profile, followed by an extended maturation period—an extra year compared to the estate’s regular Sangiovese—partly in neutral vessels and/or larger wood, to build complexity and texture while keeping oak influence subtle. This patient approach allows the wine’s natural character and the nuances of its terroir to shine through.

This Romagna Sangiovese Superiore is a versatile partner at the table and excels with Italian-inspired cuisine. Pair it with fresh pasta dishes like tagliatelle al ragù, lasagne, or baked cannelloni, as well as grilled pork, roast chicken, charcuterie, and semi-aged cheeses such as Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano. Its bright acidity and fine tannins also make it an excellent match for tomato-based dishes, mushroom risotto and herb-roasted vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C; a short decant of 30–45 minutes helps the aromas open up and softens the tannins, especially in its youth.
