Description
Sept Obeideh Skin Contact 2022 is a groundbreaking orange wine from Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, crafted entirely from the indigenous Obeideh grape. Inspired by traditional Georgian amber wines, winemaker Maher Harb set out to create the first skin-contact Obeideh in Lebanon, marrying ancient techniques with local heritage. This is a vibrant, characterful bottling that redefines what Lebanese white varieties can achieve when treated with extended maceration.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sept Obeideh Skin Contact 2022 shows a luminous, bright orange hue – more golden-sunset than deep amber – a reflection of Obeideh’s naturally thin skins. The wine’s color immediately hints at its freshness and delicacy, rather than heaviness or oxidation.
The nose is expressive and layered, opening with ripe stone fruits and sun-warmed peach, intertwined with subtle herbal notes and a gentle floral lift. On the palate, you’ll find a textured yet surprisingly smooth mouthfeel, with just a faint, refined tannic grip that gives the wine structure without harshness. Juicy stone fruit, hints of dried apricot, and savory herbal undertones unfold with air, supported by a clean, fresh line of acidity. The wine drinks beautifully now for its energy and aromatic complexity, but it has the structure and balance to develop additional nuance over the next few years if cellared carefully.
Production
Sourced from high-altitude vineyards in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, this wine reflects a terroir defined by generous sunshine, cool nights and limestone-rich soils that help preserve acidity and aromatic purity. Obeideh grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to capture both fruit concentration and freshness. Drawing inspiration from Georgian qvevri traditions, the must is left in prolonged contact with its skins and berries for seven months, allowing gentle extraction of color, tannin and texture from Obeideh’s delicate skins. The result is a naturally expressive orange wine that relies on time and patience, rather than heavy intervention, to shape its character.
Food & Serving
This versatile orange wine is an excellent partner for a broad range of dishes, especially those that bridge freshness and richness. Think mezze spreads, grilled fish, aromatic Middle Eastern cuisine, roasted poultry, mushroom dishes, and vegetable-based plates with herbs and spice. Its gentle tannins and vibrant acidity make it particularly at home with umami-rich foods and dishes with olive oil, garlic, or herbs. Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to highlight its aromatics and texture. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes is recommended to let the wine open fully and reveal its layered stone-fruit and herbal complexity.
