Description

Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2021 is a remarkably precise and age-worthy expression of Bolgheri’s most celebrated wine. Defined by its granite-like structure, limestone clarity and exceptional poise, this vintage combines Cabernet Sauvignon with 12% Cabernet Franc to deliver a powerful yet highly refined Italian red. Sassicaia’s history began with Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta’s pioneering plantings in the 1940s, and the wine remains one of Italy’s most important and collectible bottlings.

Tasting Notes
The wine appears deep ruby with a dark, youthful core. Its nose is initially reserved and beautifully focused, revealing impressions of crushed limestone, dark cassis, blackcurrant and dried mint, followed by blood orange, subtle spice and finely integrated oak. On the palate, it is complete and profound, with impressive freshness, concentrated dark fruit and a firm, almost sculptural texture. The finish is long, dry and mineral, marked by remarkable precision rather than overt sweetness or weight. Sassicaia 2021 is clearly built for extended cellaring. Its tightly coiled structure and persistent freshness suggest significant development potential over the coming decades, with the balance and concentration to reward patience in a well-managed cellar.

Production
Produced in Bolgheri on Tuscany’s Mediterranean coast, Sassicaia benefits from a maritime climate, cooling coastal breezes and gravelly, mineral-rich soils with limestone and stone deposits. The estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are harvested by hand from carefully selected vineyard parcels. Following gentle vinification designed to preserve freshness and site character, the wine is matured in French oak barriques before further bottle ageing. The result is a wine that reflects both the warmth of the Bolgheri coast and the clarity, firmness and mineral character of its terroir.

Food & Serving
Enjoy Sassicaia 2021 with classic Tuscan dishes, grilled or roasted beef, venison, lamb, wild boar ragù and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. As a young vintage, it benefits from decanting for two to three hours, although a cautious pour into a large Burgundy or Bordeaux glass can help preserve its evolution over an extended dinner. Older bottles should be decanted carefully, primarily to separate any sediment.

Producer
Tenuta San Guido is one of Italy’s landmark estates and the historic home of Sassicaia. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc near the Tuscan coast in the 1940s, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux; the first commercial vintage was released in 1968. Sassicaia helped establish Bolgheri as a world-class wine region and was ultimately granted its own DOC in 1994. Today, the estate remains internationally recognised for producing one of the world’s most distinguished Cabernet-based wines.
