Description
Pontet-Canet 2009 is a standout Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most admired Fifth Growth estates, combining power, precision, and remarkable depth. Born from a vintage widely celebrated for its richness and balance, it offers the kind of concentration and structure that have made Pontet-Canet a benchmark for modern Left Bank wine.
Tasting Notes
Deep, saturated ruby in the glass, the wine opens with layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, and subtle floral tones, with earthy and spicy nuances unfolding with air. On the palate it is dense yet refined, showing ripe dark fruit, polished tannins, fresh acidity, and the classic Pauillac imprint of cassis, pencil lead, and mineral drive.
The finish is long and composed, with impressive persistence and the kind of structure that suggests excellent aging potential. While already expressive, it is a wine that can continue to evolve gracefully for many years, gaining further complexity and softness over time.
Production
Produced in Pauillac on gravelly soils that are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Pontet-Canet benefits from excellent drainage and vines that are forced to root deeply, helping to create wines of intensity and definition. The 2009 vintage brought ripe, healthy fruit, allowing for a careful harvest at optimal maturity and vinification aimed at preserving purity, texture, and balance.
Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for classic rich dishes such as ribeye steak, roasted lamb, duck breast, or beef tenderloin, as well as truffle-based preparations and hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1.5 to 3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and show its aromatic complexity.
Producer
Pontet-Canet is one of Pauillac’s most respected estates and has earned a strong reputation for quality, innovation, and consistency. As a Fifth Growth from the 1855 Classification, it has become especially notable in recent decades for its commitment to biodynamic farming and for producing wines that often outperform their classification, gaining significant acclaim among collectors and critics alike.
