Description

Highland Park 30 Year Old (2023) is a beautifully mature Orkney single malt that showcases the distillery’s unmistakable balance of honeyed sweetness, gentle peat smoke, and sherried depth. Released as a prestige bottling, it reflects both the character of the islands and the craftsmanship that has made Highland Park one of Scotland’s most admired distilleries.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a rich amber-gold hue, a sign of long ageing and cask influence. The nose is layered and elegant, with notes of dried fruits, soft spice, heather honey, orange peel, vanilla, and a polished thread of heathery smoke. On the palate, expect remarkable complexity and poise: dark toffee, sultanas, burnt sugar, warm oak, subtle citrus, and a measured peat influence that never overpowers. The finish is long, refined, and gently smoky, with lingering spice and sweet malt. This is a whisky with excellent ageing potential already fully realised, meant to be enjoyed for its depth and harmony rather than cellared further.

Production
Produced on the Orkney Islands, Highland Park is shaped by a cool maritime climate, slow maturation, and the distillery’s traditional use of locally cut heather peat, which gives the whisky its distinctive smoky signature. While exact cask details are not provided here, a 30-year-old expression will have spent decades developing in carefully selected oak casks, allowing the spirit’s natural sweetness and island character to evolve into a more complex, rounded profile. Harvesting is not applicable; the whisky’s quality comes from malted barley, distillation, and long cask ageing.

Food & Serving
Best served neat in a tulip glass at room temperature to fully appreciate its aromatic depth and nuanced finish. If you prefer, a few drops of water can help open the sweeter and smokier layers. It pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, blue cheese, dried fruits, or a fine cigar for those who enjoy a contemplative after-dinner dram.

Producer
Highland Park was founded in Kirkwall, Orkney, in 1798 and has become one of Scotland’s most iconic distilleries, celebrated for combining island peat character with sherry-cask richness and remarkable balance. Its remote location and adherence to traditional methods have helped define its reputation as a producer of distinctive, age-worthy single malts. Over the years, Highland Park has earned a loyal following and numerous accolades for both consistency and craftsmanship.
