Description
Château Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the second wine of the legendary Château Haut-Brion, offering an accessible expression of one of Bordeaux’s most historic estates. The 2017 vintage combines the richness of Merlot with the structure and aromatic complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, delivering classic Pessac-Léognan character with impressive depth.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep garnet-purple colour. Its youthful bouquet opens with cedar and crushed blackcurrants, followed by expressive notes of raspberry tart, kirsch, black-cherry compote, unsmoked cigar and a subtle suggestion of crushed stones. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and generous, with layers of red and black fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and pronounced freshness. A long, earthy finish adds complexity and balance. Already approachable with decanting, it should develop further in bottle over the medium term as its fruit, savoury notes and tannins integrate.
Production
The 2017 blend comprises 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5.3% Cabernet Franc and 1.7% Petit Verdot. Produced at Château Haut-Brion in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the wine reflects the estate’s gravel-rich terroir, which encourages drainage and helps provide concentration and structure. The grapes are carefully selected and vinified to preserve the purity of the fruit while shaping a refined, age-worthy style.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 30–60 minutes to open the youthful aromas and soften the tannins. Its combination of ripe fruit, freshness and earthy complexity pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, venison, duck, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates and was the only château from the Graves region included in the original 1855 Classification, where it was named a Premier Cru Classé. Located in Pessac-Léognan, the estate has an exceptionally long history and is renowned for producing wines of remarkable elegance, longevity and distinctive smoky, earthy character. Le Clarence de Haut-Brion carries this heritage into a more approachable second wine, while maintaining the refinement associated with the château.
