Weingut Prager Riesling Wachau Achleiten Smaragd 2023 is a top-tier Austrian Riesling from one of the most celebrated vineyards in the Wachau. Smaragd is the region’s highest classification, reserved for fully ripe, concentrated wines with impressive depth and precision, and Achleiten has long been regarded as one of Wachau’s flagship sites.

Tasting Notes
Bright, polished, and intensely mineral in style, the wine shows a vibrant pale color with a hint of depth from its concentration. The nose opens with striking notes of flint, gunpowder smoke, and crushed stone, followed by white peach, papaya, and other ripe tropical fruit tones. On the palate, it is structured and focused, with a powerful mineral core balancing generous fruit, spice, and brisk acidity. The finish is long, dry, and mouthwatering, with excellent tension. This is a Riesling built for aging and should develop even greater complexity over the next 8–15 years, gaining more petrol, honeyed, and savory nuances.

Production
The grapes come from Achleiten, an iconic steep hillside vineyard east of Weissenkirchen in Wachau, planted with old Riesling and Grüner Veltliner vines reaching up to 65 years of age. The site’s gneiss and slate soils, combined with the demanding slope, give the wine its unmistakable mineral edge and aromatic intensity. Harvesting is done by hand, and vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 7 months of aging in steel and 2 additional months in bottle before release.

Food & Serving
This Riesling is an excellent match for refined dishes such as grilled sea bass, sashimi, shellfish, roast chicken with herbs, or lightly spiced Asian cuisine. It also pairs beautifully with asparagus and dishes featuring citrus or stone fruit accents. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short airing can help if opened young.
