Description
From one of Germany’s most revered estates, the Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz Weißer Burgunder Mandelberg Großes Gewächs 2023 captures Pinot Blanc at its most precise and mineral-driven. Sourced from the prestigious Mandelberg vineyard in the southern Pfalz, this dry white is crafted in the classic Rebholz style: uncompromisingly terroir-focused, crystal-clear and built to evolve. As a VDP.Grosses Gewächs, it sits at the top tier of German dry wines, combining depth, elegance and impressive aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Blanc typically shows a pale to medium straw-yellow color with a luminous, almost shimmering clarity that hints at its purity and concentration. The nose is refined and focused, with cool stone-fruit aromas (white peach, ripe pear and yellow apple) layered over citrus zest, fresh almond, and a distinct, salty mineral note. Subtle hints of white flowers, crushed herbs and a delicate, well-integrated oak nuance add further complexity without ever feeling heavy.
On the palate, Mandelberg GG is dry, taut and finely structured, with a precise acid backbone that gives the wine lift and length. The texture is silky yet firm, combining ripe fruit – think pear, quince and citrus – with chalky, stony minerality and gentle notes of hazelnut and brioche from extended lees contact. The finish is long, clean and subtly saline, making it both seriously gastronomic and highly drinkable. Well-stored bottles can comfortably evolve for 8–12 years, gaining more nutty, smoky and honeyed complexity while retaining their core freshness.
Production
The Mandelberg vineyard is one of the standout sites in the southern Pfalz, characterized by warm exposures, limestone-rich soils with loess and marl, and excellent drainage – an ideal setting for producing concentrated yet finely etched Weißburgunder. At Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz, the vines are farmed organically and biodynamically with meticulous hand work in the vineyard, including low yields and selective hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, Rebholz follows a minimal-intervention philosophy: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and maturation predominantly in large, traditional wooden casks and/or neutral oak on the fine lees. This approach preserves the clarity of fruit and the signature Mandelberg minerality, while adding subtle texture and depth rather than overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Mandelberg Großes Gewächs is a superb food wine, shining alongside refined dishes such as roasted turbot, poached halibut, scallops, or trout with herb butter. It also pairs beautifully with poultry (roast chicken, guinea fowl), veal, asparagus dishes, and sophisticated vegetable cuisine featuring mushrooms, fennel or celeriac, as well as mild to medium-soft cheeses. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its precision and aromatic detail. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a carafe to allow the wine to open and fully express its layered minerality; with a few years of bottle age, a gentle decant is still recommended to reveal its more complex, nutty and savory facets.
Producer
Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz, based in Siebeldingen in the southern Pfalz, is one of Germany’s benchmark estates and a longtime member of the VDP, the association of Germany’s top quality wineries. For decades, the Rebholz family has been a pioneer of uncompromising, terroir-driven dry wines, long before this style became the norm. Their commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, low yields and meticulous handwork in the vineyards has cemented their reputation as a reference producer for Riesling, Pinot varieties and Grosses Gewächs wines in the region. Regularly acclaimed in leading German and international wine guides, Rebholz wines are sought after for their clarity, age-worthiness and precisely articulated sense of place.
