Description
Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz Riesling Kastanienbusch Großes Gewächs 2023 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the most revered crus in the Pfalz. Sourced from the steep, red-sandstone slopes of the Kastanienbusch vineyard, this Grosses Gewächs captures both the power and precision that define top German Riesling. Highly allocated and age-worthy, it is a serious bottle for collectors and lovers of terroir-driven whites. As a VDP.Großes Gewächs, this Riesling is produced under strict quality standards and represents the dry grand cru expression of this iconic site. Kastanienbusch has long been celebrated for its distinctive minerality and ability to deliver both depth and finesse, and Rebholz is widely considered one of the finest interpreters of this vineyard. The estate’s commitment to uncompromising, bone-dry styles has made these wines modern classics in the Pfalz and beyond.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Kastanienbusch GG shows a pale to medium lemon color with green reflections, signaling both youth and intensity. Swirling reveals a crystalline brightness and slow, fine legs that hint at concentration without heaviness.
The nose is refined yet expressive: ripe citrus (lime, Meyer lemon), white peach, and crisp green apple are layered with notes of wet stone, flint, and warm red sandstone, alongside hints of herbal spice (lemon balm, chamomile), white flowers, and a touch of smoky reduction that will integrate with air and time. On the palate, the wine is dry, focused and taut, with a vibrant, linear acidity that drives through the mid-palate. Citrus zest, stone fruit and crunchy orchard fruit are wrapped around a core of salty, stony minerality typical of Kastanienbusch. The texture is both firm and silky, with impressive length that leaves a lingering impression of lime oil, crushed rock, and delicate herbal notes. The balance between fruit, acidity, and structure suggests significant aging potential.
This 2023 has the backbone to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more in good cellaring conditions. Over time, the primary fruit will give way to more complex nuances of dried citrus peel, honey, smoke, and petrol, while the mineral spine and acidity will keep the wine fresh and precise.
Production
The Kastanienbusch vineyard is one of the Pfalz’s most celebrated grand cru sites, perched on steep, south and south-east–facing slopes dominated by red sandstone soils with layers of clay and loam. This unique terroir delivers Rieslings of striking minerality, tension, and aromatic lift, while the warm, dry Pfalz climate ensures full phenolic ripeness without sacrificing acidity. At Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz, the vines are farmed organically and biodynamically inspired, with low yields and meticulous canopy management to ensure optimal grape quality. Harvest is done by hand in multiple passes, allowing only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes to be selected for the Großes Gewächs bottling. In the cellar, Rebholz follows a minimal-intervention philosophy: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with ambient yeasts, and maturation on fine lees in stainless steel and/or large, neutral wooden casks (Stück- or Doppelstückfässer). The wine is vinified fully dry, with no chaptalization and no masking of the vineyard character, resulting in a Riesling that is an unadorned, precise expression of Kastanienbusch.
Food & Serving
This Kastanienbusch GG is a superb partner for refined dishes that can match its intensity and acidity. Think high-quality seafood such as turbot, halibut, scallops, or langoustines, especially when prepared with citrus, fennel, or light cream sauces. It pairs beautifully with sushi and sashimi, fine shellfish, and delicately spiced Asian cuisine (Thai, Vietnamese) where lime, ginger, or lemongrass are in play. Classic German pairings include roasted poultry, veal in light jus, and seasonal vegetable dishes with asparagus, artichokes, or root vegetables. Strong enough to complement soft cheeses like aged goat cheese or young Comté, it also shines with refined vegetarian cuisine, herb-driven dishes, and tartare preparations. Serve at 9–11 °C. In its youth, a short decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended to open up the aromatics and soften the structure; older bottles should be handled gently and may need only a brief time in a carafe or simply some air in the glass.
