Named in the 14th century for the many ‘hundred-gulden’ trades it commanded, this historic site today is prized for producing some of Germany’s most distinctive limestone-driven Rieslings.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Hundertgulden GG is pale lemon with greenish reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is initially discreet and slightly reductive, a common trait of top dry Riesling in its early phase, then slowly opens to reveal wet stone, crushed shell, and chalk dust, wrapped around delicate notes of green apple, lime zest, white peach and subtle herbal hints of lemon balm and chamomile. On the palate, the wine is linear, taut and deeply mineral, with a striking interplay of ripe yet cool citrus and orchard fruit against a powerful backbone of acidity. The limestone imprint is unmistakable, giving a salty, almost chalky grip and a long, precise finish. Despite its intensity and density, the texture remains finely etched and elegant. Still very youthful, the 2024 has excellent aging potential; expect it to unfurl and gain complexity over 8–15 years, developing more stone fruit, smoky and honeyed nuances while retaining its vibrant spine.

Production
The Hundertgulden vineyard in Rheinhessen is known as one of Germany’s most carbonate-rich sites, dominated by pure, fossil-rich limestone that imparts a distinctive, saline minerality and finesse to the wines. Weingut Knewitz farms this parcel organically (Bio), with low yields and meticulous canopy management to ensure slow, even ripening and optimal grape health. Harvest is carried out by hand in small batches, allowing strict selection of perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling berries. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented with minimal intervention, often using native yeasts and extended lees contact in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak, to preserve purity while adding subtle texture. The result is an uncompromising, terroir-driven Großes Gewächs that speaks clearly of limestone and cool-climate precision.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet finely cut dry Riesling pairs beautifully with sophisticated, subtly rich cuisine that can match its structure and minerality. Think ceviche or sashimi of firm white fish, scallops with citrus beurre blanc, steamed turbot, or grilled prawns with herbs. It also shines with veal schnitzel, roasted poultry, mild goat’s cheese, or vegetable-focused dishes featuring asparagus, fennel, or green herbs. Serve at 9–11 °C for maximum clarity of aroma and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 45–90 minutes is recommended to help the reductive notes blow off and allow the green fruit and stony character to fully emerge.
