Description
In magnum format, the 2022 Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Riesling Halenberg Großes Gewächs shows why this steep Nahe vineyard is counted among Germany’s finest dry Riesling sites. This is a wine of quiet power rather than showiness, combining mineral depth, precision and age‑worthy structure. The broader shoulders of the magnum accentuate its slow‑unfolding complexity and promise a long, graceful evolution in the cellar. Sourced from the famed Halenberg vineyard, fully south‑facing with inclines of up to 70%, this Großes Gewächs is hewn from blue slate and quartzite soils that yield tiny, intensely flavored berries. Its hallmark is an almost Burgundian elegance wrapped around a core of stony, saline minerality. Halenberg’s reputation goes back many decades, but it is Emrich‑Schönleber’s meticulous work over the last generation that has firmly established it as one of the benchmark dry Rieslings of Germany.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Halenberg GG Magnum is pale straw with greenish highlights, youthful and vibrant, with a slight viscosity that hints at extract and concentration. As is typical for this site when young, the nose is initially restrained and finely etched rather than exuberant. With air, layers emerge: cool citrus zest, white peach and crunchy pear, intertwined with delicate herbal notes—lemon balm, chamomile, fennel frond—and that subtle reductive edge of wet flint and smoke that is so characteristic of Halenberg.
On the palate, the wine is taut, linear and deeply salty, with an almost electric interplay between ripe fruit and racy acidity. Stone fruits and lime peel sit over a core of crushed slate, iodine and quartz, giving a firm, stony backbone. The texture is both finely grained and tightly coiled, with an impressive density that never feels heavy. The finish is long, vibrating with citrus, smoke and herbs, and leaves a precise, mouthwatering mineral imprint. In magnum, this 2022 has excellent aging potential: expect it to develop and gain aromatic complexity over 15–20 years, with its most expressive plateau likely from around 2028 onward.
Production
Halenberg is a dramatic, amphitheater‑like slope in the Nahe, fully south‑facing, with gradients that reach up to 70%. The soils are a mosaic of blue slate and hard quartzite, extremely stony and well‑drained, forcing the old, deep‑rooted Riesling vines to work hard for water and nutrients. This harsh, mineral terroir, combined with the warm exposition and cool Nahe nights, produces grapes of high aromatics, ripe yet impeccably balanced by acidity. Emrich‑Schönleber harvests Halenberg by hand, typically in multiple selective passes to pick only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and allowed a slow, temperature‑controlled fermentation—often with a significant proportion of native yeasts—before maturing on fine lees in stainless steel and large traditional German oak (Stück or Doppelstück) to build texture and complexity without overt wood influence. The Großes Gewächs is bottled with minimal intervention to preserve the vivid expression of site, with magnums filled specifically for long‑term aging.
Food & Serving
This focused, mineral Riesling calls for refined, subtly prepared dishes rather than heavy sauces. It pairs beautifully with classic seafood—poached turbot, grilled sea bass, scallops or langoustines—as well as sushi and sashimi, where its precision and salinity shine. It also works superbly with fine poultry (roast chicken, guinea fowl), veal in light jus, or vegetable‑driven dishes like asparagus, fennel, or herbed risottos. For spicier pairings, think along the lines of delicately spiced Asian cuisine—ginger, lemongrass and light chili rather than searing heat. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to balance freshness and aromatic expression. In its youth, especially in magnum, a short decant of 45–60 minutes is highly recommended to allow the reduction and flinty notes to open; with maturity, simply double‑decant shortly before serving.
Producer
Weingut Emrich‑Schönleber is one of the star estates of the Nahe and among the reference points for dry Riesling in Germany. The family has been growing grapes in Monzingen for generations, but it was particularly under Werner and later Frank Schönleber that the estate rose to prominence, meticulously identifying and restoring top sites such as Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen. Today, as a member of the prestigious VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), Emrich‑Schönleber is widely regarded as a master of terroir‑driven Rieslings that combine clarity, finesse and remarkable aging capacity. Their Großes Gewächs bottlings from Halenberg routinely receive top scores from international critics and are sought after by collectors who prize their understated power and mineral intensity.
