Description
The 2022 Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Riesling Frühlingsplätzchen Großes Gewächs is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most coveted steep-slope vineyards. As a Großes Gewächs (GG), it represents the top tier of classified dry wines in Germany, combining precision, depth, and remarkable finesse. This cuvée captures the elegance and filigree minerality that have made Frühlingsplätzchen a reference point for lovers of fine, terroir-driven Riesling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale lemon color with green reflexes, hinting at its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is intensely expressive yet refined, with layers of white peach, ripe citrus, lime zest, and juicy pear, supported by notes of white flowers, wild herbs, and a distinctive, cool stony minerality typical of the site.
On the palate, the 2022 Frühlingsplätzchen GG is crystalline and precise, driven by vibrant acidity and a finely etched structure. Expect a juicy core of stone fruit and citrus, interwoven with hints of grapefruit, green apple, and delicate spice, all riding on a long, saline, mineral-laced finish. The texture is sleek and almost weightless, with impressive concentration without heaviness. While already captivating in its youth, this wine has excellent aging potential; over 8–15 years it will develop more complexity, gaining notes of honey, dried herbs, and smoky minerality while maintaining its backbone of freshness.
Production
Frühlingsplätzchen is one of Emrich-Schönleber’s signature grand cru vineyards, a steeply sloping site with predominantly red slate and weathered sandstone soils that give the Riesling its lifted, floral profile and precise mineral character. The vines grow in a cool, breezy exposition that allows for a long ripening period, preserving acidity while building aromatic complexity. Harvest is carried out by hand in multiple passes through the vineyard to select only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes—essential for Großes Gewächs quality. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented with carefully managed, often spontaneous fermentations in stainless steel and/or large traditional German oak (Stück or Doppelstück) to preserve purity and nuance. Extended lees contact adds texture and depth without masking the inherent delicacy of the terroir, resulting in a dry Riesling of clarity, tension, and refined power.
Food & Serving
This Riesling Großes Gewächs is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside refined dishes that echo its precision and minerality. Ideal pairings include delicately prepared seafood such as sashimi, ceviche, poached turbot, scallops, or grilled sea bass, as well as shellfish, oysters, and fine sushi. It also complements light poultry dishes, veal, and vegetable-focused cuisine—think asparagus, fennel, or dishes with citrus, ginger, or fresh herbs—as well as lightly spiced Asian or modern Nordic-inspired plates. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics to unfold gradually. Young bottles benefit from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes to open up the nose and soften the initial tension; mature bottles can be served without decanting but poured into appropriately shaped white wine glasses to highlight the wine’s complexity.
Producer
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber is widely regarded as one of the leading estates of the Nahe, a region celebrated for producing some of Germany’s most finely etched Rieslings. Based in Monzingen, the family has been cultivating vines for generations, but it is in the last few decades—under the guidance of Werner and Frank Schönleber—that the domaine has risen to the very top tier of German winegrowers. Their holdings in grand cru sites such as Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen are considered among the finest vineyards in the country, consistently yielding Rieslings of precision, depth, and age-worthiness. The estate is a longstanding member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), and its Großes Gewächs wines frequently receive top scores and international acclaim, helping to cement the Nahe’s reputation as a source of world-class dry Riesling.
