Description
The 2006 Wegeler Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare and highly concentrated sweet wine from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Produced in the noble Trockenbeerenauslese style from individually selected, botrytised Riesling grapes, it combines remarkable richness with the vibrant acidity for which the Mosel is renowned. Presented in a 375 ml bottle, it is ideally suited to special occasions, gifting or contemplative after-dinner drinking.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant golden in colour, this mature Riesling offers an intense bouquet of ripe peach, apricot, honey and candied fruit, complemented by the characteristic mineral nuances of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. On the palate, it is luscious and full-bodied, with concentrated sweetness balanced by lively acidity. A long, persistent finish brings notes of honeyed fruit and fine mineral freshness.
The wine is already at an attractive stage of maturity, with the potential to develop further complexity when carefully cellared. Stored under suitable conditions, it may continue to evolve for many years, revealing deeper dried-fruit, spice and caramelised notes.
Production
The grapes come from the steep, sun-exposed slopes of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a prestigious Mosel site known for its slate soils, excellent drainage and ability to produce finely textured, mineral-driven Rieslings. For a Trockenbeerenauslese, only individually selected, naturally shrivelled berries affected by noble rot are harvested by hand. This painstaking selection results in very low yields and exceptional concentration, while the wine’s natural acidity preserves balance and freshness.
Food & Serving
Enjoy this Trockenbeerenauslese at approximately 8–10°C. Its concentrated sweetness and refreshing acidity make it a natural match for crème brûlée, tiramisu, fruit tarts and other fruit-based desserts; it can also be served as an elegant aperitif or digestif. Decanting is generally unnecessary for this 375 ml bottle, although carefully opening and allowing the wine a little time in the glass can help reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1882, Wegeler is a respected German wine producer with a long-standing presence in the Mosel and Rheingau. The estate is particularly associated with classic Riesling from distinguished vineyard sites, where steep slopes, slate soils and careful hand harvesting form the basis of its wines. Its production of fine Prädikatsweine, including rare noble-sweet styles such as Trockenbeerenauslese, reflects the importance of the Mosel’s historic vineyard tradition.
