Description
A rare auction bottling from one of the Rheingau’s most historic estates, the 2011 Steinberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Goldkapsel showcases the remarkable concentration that defines Germany’s finest sweet wines. Produced from carefully selected, noble-rot-affected grapes and presented in a 375 ml bottle, it is a luxurious collector’s wine with outstanding richness and longevity.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, luminous golden hue. Its complex bouquet reveals layers of ripe stone fruit, candied citrus, honey and delicate spice, with the botrytis influence adding depth and an alluring, subtly savory complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and intensely concentrated, balancing pronounced sweetness with vibrant acidity. Flavors of mature fruit, honey and warm spice lead into a remarkably long, lingering finish. With its concentration and acidity, this Trockenbeerenauslese has excellent aging potential and can continue to develop beautifully for many years.
Production
Sourced from the renowned Steinberg vineyard in the Rheingau, the wine benefits from a prestigious site and the region’s cool climate, which helps Riesling retain freshness alongside its natural sweetness. Trockenbeerenauslese is made from individually selected, shriveled grapes affected by noble rot, resulting in exceptionally concentrated must. The 2011 vintage was vinified to preserve the wine’s balance between opulent sweetness, aromatic intensity and refreshing acidity.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. It is an exquisite match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie, blue cheese and foie gras, while its complexity also makes it captivating on its own as an aperitif or contemplative finale to a meal. Decanting is not essential, but a gentle decant can help open the wine if it is served young; older bottles are best handled carefully and poured slowly to avoid disturbing any sediment.
Producer
Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s most historic wine estates, with roots reaching back to the Cistercian monks who established Kloster Eberbach in the 12th century. Today, the estate is a leading name in the Rheingau and is renowned for its distinguished Rieslings, historic vineyards and commitment to producing wines of precision and longevity. The Steinberg vineyard is among its most celebrated sites, and this auction Goldkapsel bottling represents the estate’s finest, most limited style of sweet wine.
