Description

A rare late-harvest treasure from the Rheingau, the 1989 Rauenthaler Baiken Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was made from exceptionally concentrated, botrytis-affected grapes. Produced by the historic Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach, this mature German sweet wine combines remarkable richness with the vibrant acidity that gives great Riesling its enduring appeal.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, luminous golden colour, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its expressive bouquet offers layers of ripe peach, apricot, honey and dried-fruit nuances, complemented by a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is opulent and richly sweet, yet beautifully balanced by refreshing Riesling acidity. The finish is persistent and finely mineral, with the concentration and structure expected of a top-level Trockenbeerenauslese. Properly stored, this historic 1989 vintage can continue to develop gracefully for many years, making it an especially compelling choice for collectors.

Production
The grapes originate in the Rauenthaler Baiken vineyard in the Rheingau, a renowned site known for producing precise and long-lived Rieslings. Trockenbeerenauslese is among Germany’s highest quality classifications and is made only in exceptional conditions, from individually selected, shrivelled grapes often affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). This natural concentration intensifies the fruit, sweetness and aromatic complexity of the wine.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its richness and acidity make it a superb partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, panna cotta, blue cheese and foie gras, while it is equally suited to serving on its own as the finale to a special meal. Decanting is generally unnecessary; instead, open carefully and allow the wine a little time in the glass to reveal its full aromatic depth.

Producer
Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach traces its roots to the Cistercian monastery of Kloster Eberbach, founded in 1136 and now regarded as one of Germany’s most historically significant wine estates. With vineyards across the Rheingau, the estate has played a defining role in the region’s Riesling tradition for centuries. Its combination of historic vineyard sites, meticulous selection and long experience with noble-sweet wines makes this 1989 Rauenthaler Baiken a particularly noteworthy expression of the estate’s heritage.
