Description

A remarkable piece of Rheingau wine history, the 1953 Hochheimer Domdechaney Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Staatsweingüter Eltville at Kloster Eberbach is a rare collector’s bottle with extraordinary maturity. Made from highly concentrated Riesling grapes from Hochheim’s prestigious Domdechaney vineyard, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the quality and cellar potential of Germany’s finest sweet wines from the post-war era.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden hue, likely showing the pronounced colour that comes with more than seven decades of bottle age. Its mature bouquet combines preserved and ripe fruit with honeyed notes and delicate spice, while further tertiary nuances may emerge depending on the bottle’s condition and storage history. On the palate, it is described as full-bodied and complex, with a refined balance between sweetness and acidity. The long, elegant finish is characteristic of a well-made Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese, a style prized for its concentration and remarkable longevity. As a 1953 vintage, it is fully mature and should be approached as a historic drinking experience; its condition and remaining freshness will depend greatly on provenance and storage.

Production
The grapes were carefully harvested by hand and transported in small crates to preserve their concentration and integrity. Following gentle pressing and a prolonged fermentation, the wine matured for many years in oak casks, allowing its intense fruit, honeyed richness and spice complexity to develop. The wine originates from Hochheim’s Domdechaney vineyard in the Rheingau, a distinguished site known for producing characterful Riesling.

Food & Serving
This mature sweet Riesling is best served in small portions at around 10–12°C, allowing its aromas and balance to show without making the sweetness feel heavy. It pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, mature blue cheese and delicate pastries, while also making a memorable choice for a celebratory tasting. Decanting is not always necessary for an old wine: standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring carefully is generally preferable, with a gentle decant only if sediment is present and the wine appears sufficiently robust.

Producer
Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s most historic wine estates, founded by Cistercian monks in 1136 and long regarded as a leading force in the Rheingau. Staatsweingüter Eltville, associated with the estate’s historic wine tradition, helped preserve and showcase the region’s finest vineyard sites, including Hochheim’s Domdechaney. This bottle reflects the estate’s long-standing reputation for producing ageworthy Riesling of exceptional distinction.
