Description
A remarkable 1979 auction wine from the historic Staatsweingüter Eltville at Kloster Eberbach, this Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder Weißherbst Eiswein-Beerenauslese showcases the extraordinary longevity of German sweet wines. Made from Pinot Noir and released in strictly limited quantities, it is a rare collector’s bottle with both vintage character and impressive provenance from one of the Rheingau’s most celebrated sites.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a luminous amber-gold colour, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its mature bouquet combines ripe dried fruit with honey, warm spice and subtle oak-derived nuances. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, balancing luscious sweetness with refreshing acidity. The finish is long, graceful and persistent, with layers of preserved fruit and spice emerging as the wine opens.
This is a mature wine intended to be enjoyed for its developed tertiary character, although well-stored bottles may continue to evolve in the glass. As with any nearly half-century-old wine, condition and provenance are especially important.
Production
The wine comes from the steep Assmannshäuser Höllenberg vineyard in the Rheingau, a site renowned for producing outstanding Spätburgunder. The grapes were hand-selected for exceptional ripeness and concentration, with the Eiswein-Beerenauslese designation indicating the wine’s rare combination of frozen-harvest character and Beerenauslese-level richness. According to the supplied producer information, it was matured for many years in oak casks, allowing its texture and complex mature aromas to develop.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature cheeses; it can also be served in small pours as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally not essential, but careful decanting may be worthwhile if sediment is present. Open gently and avoid over-aerating this mature wine.
Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville, now associated with the renowned Kloster Eberbach estate, is one of Germany’s historic wine institutions. With roots stretching back to the Cistercian winemaking tradition of Kloster Eberbach, the estate has played an important role in shaping the reputation of the Rheingau. Its auction wines are particularly sought after for their rarity, provenance and ability to express the exceptional quality achieved in outstanding vintages.
