Description

A remarkable piece of German wine history, this 1971 Oppenheimer Sackträger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese comes from the Staatl. Weinbaudomänen Mainz in Rheinhessen. Made from exceptionally concentrated, botrytised Riesling grapes, it is a rare dessert wine with the depth, sweetness and longevity associated with Germany’s finest Prädikatsweine.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a luminous golden colour, characteristic of a mature Trockenbeerenauslese. Its aromatic profile is richly layered, with notes of honey, ripe apricot and exotic fruit, complemented by an underlying mineral character. On the palate, it is full-bodied and intensely sweet, yet remains balanced by Riesling’s refreshing acidity. The finish is long and concentrated, with lingering fruit, honeyed nuances and a subtle mineral note. As a 1971 vintage, this is a mature and collectible wine rather than a bottle intended primarily for further ageing. Properly stored examples may continue to evolve, developing deeper dried-fruit, caramel and honeyed notes, although bottle condition and storage history are especially important for a wine of this age.

Production
The grapes were sourced from the Oppenheimer Sackträger vineyard in Rheinhessen and harvested by hand. For this Trockenbeerenauslese, only highly concentrated grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, known as noble rot, were selected. This painstaking selection reduced the water content of the grapes and intensified their sugar, fruit and aromatic concentration, creating the wine’s characteristic richness and complexity.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its concentrated sweetness and lively acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tart, crème brûlée and blue cheese. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally not necessary, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any sediment that may have formed over the decades.

Producer
The Staatl. Weinbaudomänen Mainz represent the long-standing German tradition of state-run viticulture and the pursuit of high-quality wines from Rheinhessen’s distinguished vineyards. This Oppenheimer Sackträger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese reflects that tradition through its hand-selected, botrytised fruit and its remarkable vintage age. The 1971 bottling offers a distinctive glimpse into the quality and style of historic German sweet wines.
