Description
A rare piece of Rheingau wine history, this 1953 Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Spätlese Cabinet was produced at Schloss Reinhartshausen and preserved in the estate’s cellars before being released from the treasury in 2018. With more than six decades of bottle age, it offers the opportunity to experience the remarkable longevity of fine German Riesling in an exceptionally mature and collectible format.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its long maturation in bottle. Its mature bouquet combines ripe peach, apricot and pineapple with delicate notes of honey and spice, creating an expressive and refined aromatic profile.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and complex, balancing residual sweetness with the freshness and structure expected of aged Riesling. The finish is long, graceful and lingering. As a 1953 wine, it is best appreciated for its maturity and provenance; further ageing potential will depend greatly on the individual bottle and its storage history.
Production
The wine originates from Erbacher Marcobrunn, one of the Rheingau’s historically renowned Riesling sites, and was produced at Schloss Reinhartshausen. Precise details regarding the 1953 harvest, grape selection and vinification are not available, but its classification as a Riesling Spätlese Cabinet indicates a late-harvest wine of notable ripeness and finesse. It was matured in the château’s cellars before being removed from the treasury in 2018, giving the bottle a particularly distinguished provenance.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C, allowing the wine time to reveal its mature aromas as it warms gently in the glass. It would pair beautifully with delicate fish, seafood, poultry and mildly spiced Asian cuisine, while its sweetness and mature complexity also make it a compelling wine to enjoy on its own. Decanting is not essential and should be approached carefully with such an old bottle; a gentle standing period and slow pouring are recommended if sediment is present.
Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic estate in Erbach, in the heart of Germany’s Rheingau wine region, with a long association with Riesling production and the celebrated vineyards surrounding the Rhine. The estate’s careful cellaring of this 1953 vintage, followed by its release from the treasury in 2018, underlines the importance of provenance and long-term maturation in fine German wine. This bottle will appeal particularly to collectors and enthusiasts interested in mature Rheingau Riesling and historic vintages.
