Description

A remarkable piece of Rheingau wine history, this 1959 Schloss Reinhartshausen Erbacher Herrnberg Riesling Beerenauslese was produced from carefully selected, intensely ripe grapes and kept in the estate’s cellars for more than five decades. Removed from the château cellar in 2018, it offers a rare opportunity to experience a mature German sweet wine from one of the most celebrated vintages of the post-war era.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a rich golden hue, reflecting its extraordinary age and concentration. Its bouquet is deeply aromatic, combining ripe tropical fruit with honeyed notes, while hints of mature stone fruit add further complexity. On the palate, flavours of apricot, peach and tropical fruit are balanced by a refreshing vein of acidity. The wine is sweet, layered and impressively persistent, finishing with remarkable length. Already fully mature, it should be enjoyed for its evolved character, although well-stored bottles may continue to develop for many years.

Production
Made from Riesling grapes in the Erbacher Herrnberg vineyard of Germany’s Rheingau, this Beerenauslese represents one of the region’s most concentrated styles of sweet wine. Beerenauslese is produced from individually selected, exceptionally ripe berries, often affected by noble rot, which intensifies their sugar and aromatic richness. This bottle was matured for more than 50 years in the cellars of Schloss Reinhartshausen before being released from the estate’s reserves in 2018.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. It is a natural partner for crème brûlée, fruit sorbet, peach or apricot desserts, blue cheese and foie gras, while its balance also makes it an elegant aperitif or digestif. Decanting is generally not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright and pouring slowly can help separate any sediment that may have formed during its long maturation.

Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic wine estate in the Rheingau, a region renowned for its world-class Riesling and long tradition of producing age-worthy sweet wines. The estate’s carefully cellared wines are particularly valued for their ability to mature gracefully over many decades. Presented in a 0.7-litre bottle, this 1959 Erbacher Herrnberg Beerenauslese is both a distinctive addition to a serious collection and an exceptional gift for a special occasion.
