Description

Reichsrat von Buhl’s 1950 Forster Ungeheuer Riesling Beerenauslese is a rare, historic sweet wine from one of the Pfalz’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from highly concentrated late-harvest Riesling grapes, it combines remarkable richness with the freshness needed for a long, graceful finish. A captivating bottle for collectors and enthusiasts of mature German dessert wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its complex bouquet reveals layers of ripe fruit, honey and warming spice, with the mature, nuanced character expected from a well-preserved bottle of this vintage. On the palate, it is sweet, concentrated and richly textured, balanced by a pleasant acidity that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. The finish is long and persistent. At more than seven decades old, this is a mature wine to enjoy now; its precise condition and remaining life will depend greatly on provenance and storage.

Production
Produced in the Forster Ungeheuer vineyard in the Pfalz from Riesling, this Beerenauslese represents a style made from exceptionally ripe, carefully selected grapes. The wine’s concentration and 8.5% alcohol are characteristic of a naturally sweet late-harvest wine. Specific details regarding the harvest selection, botrytis influence and vinification of the 1950 vintage are not available, but the finished wine clearly reflects the richness and intensity associated with this category.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, ideally at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. It is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, honeyed pastries and blue cheese, while its balance also makes it enjoyable as a contemplative aperitif. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any natural sediment; a short period of aeration in the glass is recommended.

Producer
Reichsrat von Buhl is a historic estate based in Deidesheim, in the heart of Germany’s Pfalz region, with roots reaching back to the 19th century. The producer is closely associated with the prestigious vineyards around Forst and Deidesheim, including the renowned Forster Ungeheuer site, and has long been recognised for its expressive Rieslings. This 1950 Beerenauslese offers a rare opportunity to experience the estate’s heritage through a mature, collectible sweet wine.
